Description

Marcel Duchamp made this original model in 1936 in Paris from the black and white silver print by Man-Ray of 1935, after his window miniature the Brawl of Austerlitz of 1921 (Schwarz n° 397). Duchamp colored with orange ink this silver print and with white gouache the mounted transparent films.

The colored reproduction, based on this model, is mentioned in the Catalogue Raisonné dated 1997 of Arturo Schwarz (n° 448; p 738). 70 copies were printed to illustrate the magazine Au Lavoir Noir by André Breton, Edition GLM (Guy Lévis Mano), Paris 1936 (Collection Repères, n°6) and some more, on Duchamp’s request’s, to be included in his “Boite en Valise” .

This original model is recorded in the Marcel Duchamp’s Association archives under n° 36.675 M (recto).
